30 Sad Songs no 25. You Shouldn’t Have Set My Soul on Fire – Inez Foxx

imagesThis is going to have to represent dozens of obscure Southern soul songs that I can’t necessarily remember or find. Everyone knows Inez Foxx for Mockingbird, the hit she recorded with her brother Charlie. After that, she did a few solo things, including this scorcher about an abandoned woman who’s still in love with the man that dumped her. I came across it on a compilation album that I got out of Swiss Cottage library sometime in the early 80s; I don’t recall ever hearing it on the radio when it came out in 1970. I listened to it through various unrequited affairs when I imagined that the young man in question had ‘set my soul on fire’, although what was smouldering was something else that rhymed with ‘soul’.
