30 Sad Songs no. 20. I’ve Been Loving You Too Long – Otis Redding

Photo of Otis ReddingThere’s not much to say about this really – I think it’s the best thing Otis Redding ever did, it’s a wonderful melody with beautiful, simple lyrics about how love gets stronger but also more problematic with time. Redding’s delivery is perfect, starting off very simply and building towards a big climax that relies on conviction rather than technique to deliver its punch. There’s a notable version of the song by Ike and Tina Turner which gets my nomination as the most inappropriate cover of all time – someone thought it would be a great idea to turn it into a jokey sex-fest with Tina fellating the mic and having an orgasm. I am very keen on fellatio, but really, there’s a time and a place.
