Physique: The Life of John S Barrington was published in 1997 after a long and sometimes difficult process. I first met the notorious photographer in 1985, when I approached him for an interview for Square Peg magazine, a quarterly gay arts journal I was contributing to at the time. One thing led to another, and by the end of the year I found myself collaborating with him on an autobiography, telling the tale of his outrageous career picking up and photographing soldiers, sailors and airmen from the streets of wartime London, becoming a pioneering post-War pornographer, going to jail and having a family along the way. Before John died in 1991, he asked me to ‘do something about this fucking book’, leaving me his papers, journals and thousands of photographs. Physique was the result.
The book’s currently out of print, but I’m hoping to get an e-edition up and running this year.
